SPINNER Joe Evans starred for Warwick Seconds as they got their Warwickshire League Division Eight East campaign off to a good start with a 73-run victory over Nuneaton Thirds.
Hosts Nuneaton won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bowl first in favourable conditions.
Warwick found the going tough and lost wickets at regular intervals, with only Jon Davis (19), Umair Mushtaq (28) and Joe Evans (25) reaching double figures.
Nuneaton fielded impeccably and took all of their chances as the visitors reached 146 all out.
The Nuneaton batsmen struggled in reply and Warwick immediately took control of the game, inspired by an exceptional spell of left arm orthodox spin from Evans who opened the bowling and returned career best figures of 10-5-7-6.
Evans was ably assisted by Abhishek Sharma (2-15), Alex Wood (1-8) and Umair Mushtaq (1-4), and Warwick fielded and caught well as Nuneaton were bowled out for 73 in the 29th over.
Warwick gained a maximum 24 points from their first league fixture and now host Berkswell Thirds on Saturday.
