Ferrara eyes more Blaze success

Leamington Editorial 29th Apr, 2020   0

BRITISH forward Luke Ferrara has signed a new two-year contract extension with Genting Casino Coventry Blaze.

The 26-year-old moved to Coventry from Sheffield Steelers in 2017 and in each of his three years with Blaze has bettered his previous season’s points tally.

This culminated in a sensational 2019/20 campaign in which his 33 regular season goals led the whole of the Elite League – the first time a British player has earned that accolade.

In the 47 regular season games, Ferrara also collected 21 assists for a total of 54 points (fourth best in the league). In nine Challenge Cup appearances, he added three goals, four assists for seven points and was selected as part of the league’s first All-Star team.

The honours continued for Ferrara at club level as he was named Best British Player for a third time, best forward, coach’s player of the season, players’ player of the season and player of the season.

His final goal of the season to dramatically defeat Dundee Stars in the dying seconds (before the season was cut short due to the Coronavirus outbreak) was named Champagne Moment of the Season.

Ferrara has amassed 173 Elite League competition games with the Blaze, scoring 66 goals with 65 assists for 131 points.

He has been an associate captain for the past two years and a regular pick for the Great Britain national team, helping his country gain promotion to the top group of the World Championships in 2018 and remain there in 2019.

A two-time Elite League and once Play-off Champion with Sheffield, Ferrara began his career with his hometown club Peterborough Phantoms. In near 300 English Premier League games he registered almost 240 points – playing a crucial role in the team winning the play-off title in his final season of 2014/15.

Blaze head coach Danny Stewart said: “Getting Feds back is a massive boost to our plans for next season and the foreseeable future.

“He’s brought into the jersey and club 100 per cent and is the type of player and person we want here.

“He gets better every season and it was great to see his hard work pay off last season. He’s a great pro and part of our leadership group. Bringing Feds back is a great start to our aim of retaining a big chunk of our players from last season.”
