FOOTBALL - Williams goal sends Leamington into next round of FA Cup

EWAN Williams scored his first goal of the season as Leamington beat Carlton Town 1-0 to advance in the FA Cup.

Williams struck on 18 minutes to settle the Second Round Qualifying tie at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium against the Northern Premier League East side who play two levels below Leamington.

And Brakes boss Paul Holleran is hoping for a home game in the next round with the draw to take place on Monday, September 16 at 1pm.

Holleran said: “They were stubborn and well-organised opposition. We’ve won ugly and had moments, we were getting frustrated in the second half but we kept on top of that.

“We kept the back door shut and kept a clean sheet and move into the next round.

“It would have been nice to get that second goal but they didn’t allow it and our quality probably didn’t allow that either but you have to find ways to win football matches.

“We deserved to win the game, it’s cup football and we’re delighted to be in the hat because there’s been plenty of times where we’ve played okay and got knocked out.

“The FA Cup’s got loads of angles to it. Win a couple more games and it gets big then, it’s financially rewarding. There’s a lot to like about the FA Cup, every round gets bigger.

“It’ll be bigger again in the next round, and if we can get somebody here, we’ll be happy, we’re 90 minutes away from the fourth qualifying round which is a nice round to be in.”

The home side scored the game’s only goal when Rob Evans delivered a superb cross from the right and Williams guided a diving header into the bottom left corner at the back post.

Leamington are next in action against Farsley Celtic on Saturday, September 21 with kick-off at 3pm at the Impact Arena.
