Good results for Spa Striders

SPA Striders picked up a clutch of strong individual and team results.

Chris McKeown and Tim Beresford flew the Striders flag in the first race of the Leicester 5k winter series.

McKeown continued his incredible form by finishing in first place in 17:11, with Beresford following him not far behind in fourth place (18:36).

The women started the Midlands cross country league with excellent performances.




Claire Murphy led them in, finishing in 37th place in 23:47.

Jo Fleming (24:15), Laura Peake (24:34) and Clare Hinton (24:51) completed the ladies’ qualifiers.


Fiona Edwards, Mel Venables, Carolyn Wilkinson, Kate Gadsby, Anne Hurrell, Susie Stannard, Anita Lenneis, Lucy Tugwell, Jude Baum, Emma Bish, Amanda Bonjour, Lorraine Parsons, Emma Bird, Catherine Barnham, Florencia Brea, Amy Butler, Kathleen McCann, Helen Pugh, Claire Rawbone and Giada Pizzoni finished the line-up.

The team finished tenth overall and were second masters.

The men were defending their place in Division Two of the Birmingham and District Cross Country league in Worcester.

They finished in tenth place out of 14 teams, giving them an excellent fighting chance of staying up.

McKeown was first Strider over the line in 12th position (35:51), followed by Adam Notley (36:40), Steve Taylor (38:45), Ben Parkinson (41:14), Pete Teevan (41:18) and Rich Sykes (41:57). Gethyn Friswell, Cam Gow, Rob Egan, Ian Davis, Tom Gotts, Ben Cohen, Doug Rattray, Matt Leydon, Shaun Martin, Ash Hogg, Anthony Claydon and James Robbins brought the rest of the team home.

Meanwhile, Claire Murphy joined Jack Gammon and Nigel Fox for the Cirencester off-road duathlon, just missing out on a podium place in finishing as fourth lady.
