A KENILWORTH martial arts instructor has gone one better than last year’s European success by becoming a World Champion while representing Great Britain in North Carolina, USA.

Inderdeep Bening, or Indy as he is more commmonly known, travelled to America to take part in the 16th World Tang Soo Do (Korean Martial Art) Association (WTSDA) Championship along with a strong GB team which included 34 other competitors.

The 23-year-old first got into martial arts when he was seven years of age at Primary School and headed across the Atlantic high in  confidence having already won the European Championship title in Nottingham in August last  year.

Indy, who runs clubs in Coventry and Kenilworth, came up against opponents from 40 different countries across the world in Greenboro where the championship took place from July 15-16.

Under the leadership of European Director Master Mujahid Khan (7th Degree Black Belt), Indy began the championship strongly on the Friday when all the Black Belts competed and an outstanding performance in the weapons competition saw the Coventry man attain a gold medal.

It was the perfect start for Indy who was appearing in his first World Championships and things got even better in the open hand form competition, which he once again performed well in to win a second gold.

Indy came up against stiff competition   in the sparring competition and was made to settle for a silver medal, but having already won two events he was eligible to be crowned World Champion Male Grand Cup winner.

During the championship’s closing ceremonies on July 16, all totals were finalised and it was announced that Indy was the 2016 World Champion Male Grand Cup Winner.

It was history in the making again for Khan’s GB who became the first country outside the USA to win the World Champion Female Grand Cup in 2004 and again in 2006 by Master Noreen Khan from Nottingham.

It also completed a superb double triumph for Indy who added the World Championship title to his 2015 European crown.
