FOUR wins out of four has put Leamington top of the Southern League Premier Division as James Maces’ late goal at Merthyr Town on Tuesday night maintained their 100 per cent start to the 2016/17 season.
Paul Holleran’s side picked up their third victory of the season away at Hayes and Yeading on Saturday thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory and the Brakes repeated that scoreline in mid-week thanks to Maces’ injury-time winner.
Jack Edwards scored the only goal of the game on Saturday as Holleran’s side made hard work of Southern League Premier Division newcomers Hayes and Yeading United.
The Brakes took confidence from Saturday’s victory into Tuesday night’s home clash against Merthyr but it proved to be an uneventful opening 45 minutes.
Kyle McLaggon tested Breedon in the fourth minute and the hosts had to wait until the 36th minute before creating their first real chance as Thompson-Brown set up Ben George but his effort was blocked.
The game eventually came to life after the re-start with Rowe seeing his shot on the edge of the area well blocked and on 77 minutes Scott Barrow made an important clearance at the back post for the visitors.
It looked as though Merthyr were going to steal all three points as they dominated the closing stages of the match but it was the home side who made the breakthrough in injury-time.
Jack Edwards produced a brilliant cross which was headed down to Mace and the Leamington man bundled the ball home from close range to secure a fourth consecutive win for the Brakes.
