Leamington upbeat for Altrincham test

Leamington Editorial 2nd Aug, 2018   0

LEAMINGTON head into their National League North opener away to Altrincham this Saturday in fine fettle after a positive string of pre-season results.

The Brakes will be looking to cement their Step Two status for a further year after avoiding the drop last term, finishing fourth-from-bottom and just three points clear of the drop zone.

Paul Holleran’s men will hope to improve on that finish this term and they head into the new campaign with plenty to smile about after just one pre-season friendly defeat in six games, that coming in a 2-1 defeat to a Birmingham City select XI last Wednesday night.

Brakes followed that up with a 2-1 home victory over Southern League Division One Central new boys Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday.

A Daniel Morris own goal put Leamington ahead after 32 minutes but within seven minutes Sporting were level when Richard Gregory nodded home.

The winner came on the stroke of half-time when Matt Stenson bagged his sixth goal of pre-season with a thumping header.
