Matt Clinton beats his record but fails to win Shelsley Climb

LEAMINGTON riders Matt Clinton and Jack O’Neill both impressed at their first hill climb test at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in Worcestershire.

The October hill climb season is now under way and the two Mike Vaughan Cycles riders were able to stretch their legs on what proved to be a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in the Midlands.

Clinton had set the course record last year after finishing in a time of 2 minutes and 42 seconds and this time around he went one better by beating his previous time by one second.

However, that would not be enough to take the win after current 10-mile time trial champion Richard Bussell set a new course record by just two seconds to win the event in a time of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

O’Neill also produced an excellent ride to finish in 2 minutes and 58 seconds which was the third fastest time ever recorded on the course as he finished third.

Both riders are preparing for a busy few weeks ahead which starts with the nationals on October 25 in Yorkshire and they also have to cram six more events in to the next two weekends.
