OLD LEAMINGTONIANS RFC were crowned Pride of Warwick Team of the Year on Friday night as their members’ charity fund-raising efforts through the annual Rugby4Heroes Music and Rugby Festival were recognised in style at the Pride of Warwick District awards.
The awards, sponsored by Touch FM in partnership with Phillips 66, are an annual celebration of business, civic and community activity in the districts of Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth.
The OLRFC Festival team, who have been running the Rugby4Heroes festival for six years, were presented with the prestigious Team of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding team work and volunteering activity, which has helped raise over £44,000 for armed forces charities.
The OLRFC festival team were also nominated as finalists for the overall Pride of Warwick District Community Award.
Speaking on behalf of the OLRFC Festival team, Mike Vallance said: “We are delighted to achieve this superb recognition of our volunteering efforts and we thank Touch FM, Phillips 66 and the public for their support.
“We started Rugby4Heroes six years ago through our desire to ‘do our bit’ for our servicemen and women and their families and are very proud to have made a difference to our community.
“We dedicate this award to our serving men and women, our veterans and the families of the 453 who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.”
The seventh annual Rugby4Heroes Festival will be held between May 15-17, 2015. See www.rugbyforheroes.org and search Twitter @rugby4heroes and @olrfc for more details.
