LAURA Collett, from Leamington, helped Team GB win their first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in team eventing.

Collett completed the final round of jumping to ensure Great Britain claimed back-to-back gold medals in team eventing at the Games.

Riding on her horse London 52, Collett produced an outstanding final ride to earn Team GB their first gold medal in Paris ahead of France and Japan who took silver and bronze respectively.

The British trio of Ros Canter, Tom McEwen and Collett combined to top the podium with just 91.30 penalty points ahead of France (103.60) and Japan (115.80) at the Château de Versailles.

Collett told BBC One said: “On top of the world. I have never, ever ridden into an atmosphere like that. Luckily, London is one trusty partner, so are my team.

“There’s no words to describe the atmosphere, all three days. I didn’t think anything would top the cross country, it was unreal.”

The eventing competition consists of three disciplines – dressage, cross country and jumping.

And Collett wowed in the dressage, amassing just 17.50 penalty points to set an Olympic record for the lowest dressage score.

Her efforts, alongside teammates Canter (23.40) and McEwen (25.80) meant Britain topped the standings at the end of the first event.

Collett also starred in the cross country the following day as she finished second in the individual standings after picking up just 18.30 penalty points.

Another fine ride by McEwen (25.80) looked set to put Team GB in command only for Canter (38.40) to suffer a 15-point penalty for missing a flag with an appeal rejected by Olympic officials.

That meant Britain led closest challengers France by less than five points heading into the final event.

However, Collett showed her class once again as she anchored Britain to gold after amassing just 23.10 penalty points in the jumping event to place third in the individual standings.

Her score, combined with McEwen (25.80) and Canter (42.40) saw Team GB finish clear of France as Collett claimed her second Olympic gold after winning gold in the same event at Tokyo 2020.

All three British riders have qualified for the individual finals which begin later today (2pm).
