RUGBY UNION - Claverdon complete invincible season with Old Yardleians win

CLAVERDON RFC completed an invincible season with a dominant 36-5 win against Old Yardleians to secure their 20th win of the campaign.

Claverdon achieved the feat in style as Max Oxton-Morris ran in a hat-trick of tries with Charlie Wakelam, Charlie Byrd and Hilton Garner-Jones also touching down.

The result means Claverdon finish the Midlands 4 West (South) season on 96 points with 20 wins from as many matches to become only the second squad in the club’s history to achieve an unbeaten season.

And Claverdon made a flying start when Oxton-Morris powered over from close range with Will Jackson adding the conversion after the latter’s break led to a lineout from which the try was scored.

The champions added two further tries in quick succession when Wakelam scored after Chris Johnson beat several defenders before offloading to the former who touched down.

And Byrd then scored underneath the posts after a superb turnover by number 8 James Kirby allowed the former to round the fullback and dot down to send Claverdon into the break with a 19-0 lead.

Old Yardleians scored their only points with a try down the blindside in the second half after some sustained pressure on the Claverdon line.

However, a superb individual try by Garner-Jones secured the win for Claverdon when he collected a loose ball, following a big hit by Oxton-Morris, and ran 70 metres to score.

And Oxton-Morris then completed his treble with two late tries the second of which came from a clever cross-field kick by James Williams.

For anyone looking to play rugby at a fun local community club, Claverdon’s pre-season training will begin in July.

In the meantime, social touch rugby will be running at 6.30pm on Thursday nights throughout the summer with all abilities welcome.
