CLAVERDON RFC began the New Year with a 23-5 win against Kenilworth II to avenge their narrow defeat to the same opponents earlier in the season.
Charlie Wakelam and Ethan Houghton crossed for Claverdon’s tries as Sam Turrell kicked 10 points and James Williams added a further three from the kicking tee in a comfortable win at Ossetts Hole Lane.
The result means Claverdon sit seventh in the Counties 2 Midlands West (South) table.
Claverdon made a strong start and scored a sublime opening try as a series of offloads set up Wakelam to charge over the line with Turrell adding the conversion.
However, Kenilworth replied with a try of their own from a well-worked driving maul from a lineout but were unable to add the extras as Claverdon held a narrow two-point lead at the break.
Claverdon were able to play more expansive rugby in the second half as the rain subsided with George Redwood, James Gibney and Hilton Garner-Jones all making good yards.
And Turrell extended Claverdon’s lead from the kicking tee with a superb effort from just inside the Kenilworth half.
The home side scored their second try when Houghton controlled the ball at the back of a scrum, five metres from the Kenilworth line, and scrambled over with Turrell adding the extras.
Turrell continued his fine afternoon’s work when he kicked another penalty before Williams drilled another penalty between the posts late on.
Claverdon are next in action away at league leaders Alcester on Saturday, January 14 at Kings Coughton.
