Spa Strider men's team finish fifth at Warwickshire Cross Country Championships

RUNNING: A HIGHLY competitive men’s race at the Warwickshire Cross Country Championships at Newbold Comyn saw Spa Striders’ seniors finish fifth while the Masters team came seventh.

The heavy underfoot course proved to be a challenge for all runners on Sunday but the senior team managed to overcome the hazards to finish as a close pack.

Paul Edwards once again led to the team home in a time of 41 minutes and seven seconds. He was followed home just five seconds later by Chris McKeown (41.12), Steven Taylor (41.55) and Adam Notley (42.00).

The masters team were led by Rich Sykes (42.52), with Dan Fleming (43.46) finishing close behind and Josh Layton (44.52) and James Hartwright (46.11) made up the team.




James Jaycock (45.00), Keith Wilson (45.09), Dexter Teale (45.18), Gethyn Friswell (46.29), Dan Stannard (46.53), Robert Mantell (47.34), Nick Solomon (48.42), Paul Quinney (49.18), Juan Martin (50.00), Matt Leydon (53.27) and Doug Rattray (56.06) also successfully tackled the 10km course.

In the ladies’ race, Charlotte Everard finished as the fastest female Strider in 26 minutes and 53 seconds to take 21st position.


The fourth-place masters team was made up of Kate Gadsby (28.09), Susie Stannard (29.04) and Bethan Gwynn (31.16), with Clare Hinton (31.44), Lucy Tugwell (31.56), Ruth Tennant (32.35) and Helene Wright (33.49) completing the racers of the 6km course.

Elsewhere, four Striders took on the Naunton Nearly 19 in the Cotswolds which was an 18-mile trail route.

Dan Stannard crossed the finish line in 2:43.41 and he was followed by Anne Hurrell who also finished under three hours in a time of 2:55.00, while Lorraine Parsons and Fiona Edwards recorded a time of 3:11.37.

Strider newcomer Kelsey Wiberley completed the Disney Dopey Challenge which consisted of a 5km, 10km, half marathon and marathon on consecutive days (Thursday to Sunday) in Disney World, Florida.

Wiberley led the way in the 5km race in a time of 18.37 and she went on to finish runner-up int he 10km event after crossing the finishing line in 37.41.

The half marathon was unfortunately cancelled due to storms, but Kelsey completed the half marathon distance with her husband Jim and then went on to finish second again in the marathon even in a time of 2:25.40.

Not only did Kelsey complete a personal achievement, she also set new Strider club record at 5km, 10km and marathon distances.
