Spa Striders in action at the Great North Run

A TOTAL of ten Spa Striders made the journey north to take part in the Great North Run in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on Sunday.

With the warmer-than-anticipated conditions, there were someĀ  hard miles run over the half-marathon distance (13.1 miles).

The course took runners on a route through the city towards the River Tyne and over the iconic Tyne Bridge before taking them through Gateshead and South Shields towards the finish line.

Tim Down was the first Strider home in 1:22.54 and he was followed by Stuart Lee (1:39.48), James Glover (1:48.58) and the fastest Strider lady Hannah Smith (1:50.20).




Other Striders completing the event were Simon and Lorraine Parsons (2:03.39), Claire Westrope who set a new personal best with 2:04.39, Claire Quinn (2:06.37), Nicola Wright (2:20.37) and Dave Lithgow (2:21.25).

Elsewhere, Tom Holbrook ran the Bristol half-marathon on Sunday and despite having just one week to recover from the Kenilworth Half Marathon, he finished in s respectable time of 1:45.41.


And two Strider ladies were also in action with Dawn Clarke completing the challenging Sandman Triathlon on Anglesey.

The event consisted of a 1km sea, swim followed by a 60km bike and finished with a 19km run. Clarke finished as the 13th fastest female in a time of 3:31.20.

And Mel Venables ran the Cotswold Way Ultra which covers 57 miles over two days and she finished as the second fastest lady and third overall.
