BOXING: IT WAS a winning start in 2017 for Lisa Dhesi after she came out on top against Derby’s Tara Simpkin in what was a ‘Titanic’ battle in Bedworth.
The 23-year-old went into Saturday’s bout high in confidence having stopped her two previous opponents but she came up against her toughest opponent yet.
The Fitzpatricks boxer went toe-to-toe with her opponent and showed bags of determination and desire to take the victory.
Coach Derek Fitzpatrick said: “This was by some way the most gruelling battle I have witnessed between two female boxers.
“Both girls were biting down on their gum shields showing massive heart and determination. If the truth be told, it was a tough decision.
“Both girls walked away as winners for me. But the judges saw it as Lisa just edging it and doing enough to earn a split decision win.
“This was a massive learning fight for Lisa and we are looking forward to employing those lessons.”
