Warwick thump Barton to end season on a high

HOCKEY: IT WAS an emphatic end to the season for Warwick as they thumped leaders Barton 7-2 to finish fifth in the Midland League Division One.

Following on from their unbeaten promotion season last year, Warwick have continued with their development this time around to finish inside the top five.

They finished their season with a bang at Barton where a strong 15-man team quickly established their early dominance.

The central midfield pairing of captain Fleet and Clarke created a platform for Gibson to fire home the opening goal of the game.

Warwick continued to press but a swift Barton counter resulted in a dubious short corner that was clinically dispatched to level the score.

Undeterred, Warwick continued to push forward and re-took the lead from a great Stickley finish before an excellent team move put in Hobbs for his first and a 3-1 lead at half-time.

Warwick increased their lead further through Bryce shortly after the re-start before Barton threatened a comeback by making it 4-2 soon after.

But Warwick were determined to finish the 2016/17 season on a high and kept to their game plan as their opponents started to lose composure.

Stickley got his second of the match before Clarke added to Warwick’s tally and man-of-the-match Hobbs rounded off a fine team move to put the icing on the cake late on.
