WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: THE HARD work for Warwickshire Bears women’s team begins now according to manager Jacob Robinson after his side were crowned champions of Division Three (B).
The Bears were celebrating promotion to the Second Division at the final whistle on Saturday after recording a narrow 28-22 victory away at Eastern Blue Stars on the final weekend of the women’s league season.
“That was a perfect end to a good season for the girls,” said Robinson. There was great commitment from everyone and promotion was definitely earnt. Now time to get the hard work in ready for next year.”
With only six players available, the Bears knew they were in for a tough challenge in Nottingham as they fielded a squad of inexperienced players.
They opted for a more defensive approach from the tip off and successfully limited Bluestars top scorer Kate Dickings to only a handful of chances.
The Bears were able to build a steady 13-7 lead early after the first quarter, with Anna Turney playing her part, but both sides wasted chances in what was an edgy second quarter, but by the midway point in the match the Bears were nine points in front.
A positive third quarter saw the Bears extend their lead to 23-12 and although the Bluestars fought back in the final quarter, the clock was against them and Robinson’s side held firm to be crowned champions.
Bears captain, Aimee Hillson, was overjoyed with the result, she added: “The team have played so well this season, and the addition of three new players has been brilliant.
“We’ve gelled together as if we’ve been playing much longer as a team. I’m so proud of the girls, and very excited for what the future holds for The Bears Women.”
