Warwickshire beat England in celebration match

WARWICKSHIRE Women’s Bowling Association celebrated their 80th anniversary with victory over a Bowls England team in a celebration match at Stoke Bowling Club, writes Jenny Corn.

The Headquarters of Bowls England may be just around the corner from the Leamington greens, but president Michael Jennings had travelled from Cornwall and was supported by players from counties the length and breadth of the country.

The end result was a 130-108 win for Warwickshire although, as the Bowls England president said, it could be considered a draw as both teams won on three rinks.

Highest winning rink went to David Cooke (Southam) with Stan Pitt (Avenue Coventry) and Di Medhurst (ladies’ county president) and Elaine Taylor (both Stoke), who unashamedly beat the Bowls England president’s team 35-13.

Jenny Corn with Chris Richards (both Lillington), Clive Faulkner (WCBA president) and Boris Boulstridge (Nuneaton) set off at a pace and never looked back as they went on to win 31-12.

Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) with Ann Doherty (Lillington) and Derek Wattison and David Williams (both Stratford) were closely matched but five shots on the 11th end helped their cause and they went on to win 18-15.

Janet Scott (Sherwood Park) with Graham O’Donohue (Wolvey), Chris Ward (Lillington) and Dick Allibon (RLS) started well but were soon overtaken and, although they pulled back to 13-13 on the 14th end, their opponents proved the stronger as they just pipped them to the post 21-19.

Geoff Moran (Norgren) with Joy Cooke (Blossomfield), Roger Hampson (RLS) and Liz Chedgzoy (Stratford) also started well and were 9-9 at nine ends but their opponents then took the lead and the home team eventually finished 23-16 down.

Roger Powell (Bidford) with Janet Pooler (Stoke) and Paul Brown and Di Green (both Sherwood Park) went down 24-11.

As always, Stoke Bowling Club put on an excellent meal and whether players won or lost the overall atmosphere and chat proved the afternoon had been a roaring success as yet another milestone was achieved by Warwickshire.
