Wilkinson claims annual Drive-In Texas Scramble title

NEW captains Charles Leggitt and Lesley Cheslin officially took over the reins at Kenilworth Golf Club at the annual Drive-In Texas Scramble.

The popular competition was won by Barry Wilkinson, Malcolm Young, Brigid Carrington and Ian Griffiths with 68, nett 59-and-3/8, from Simon Bisp, Richard Joyce, Richard Dorrington and Breda Stokes 70, nett 61-and-1/8.

Former club captain Tony Ranger won the Baker Cup with 38 points from Digby Webb 35 and Brian Wake 35.

Meanwhile, countback was required to determine the outcome of the popular Professional’s competition hosted for the first time by Adam Gray.




Stephen Linford prevailed with 39 points from Ken Harrison 39, Mark Bolshaw 38, Robin Koolhoven 38 and Ben Smith 38.

The ladies winner wad Liz Brown with 35 points from Alison Seymour-Mead 34, Deborah Nicholls 34, Lesley Cheslin 32 and Chris Machin 32.


Nearest the pin winners were Jon Higgitt and Lyn Harrison (2nd), Geoff Edmunds and Emma Saywell (4th), Alan Stevens and Lynn Blasdale (7th), Mick Rossborough and Anne Hastings (10th) and Phil Jordan and Sue Rattenbury (18th).

There was some good scoring in the Mitchell Goblet qualifier at Crewe Lane on Saturday.

Lee Byford 82, nett 68, took the Division A honours by virtue of a better back nine than Owen Patton 82, nett 68, while John ‘Big Daddy’ Carlin 87, nett 69, showed a welcome return to form to win Division B from Graham Stewart 86, nett 70.

Adrian Riddell posted the best gross score of 74. Roger Haddon celebrated a hole-in-one on the 140-yard 7th but it was not quite enough to get him among the prize winners.
