RUGBY UNION: A NEW partnership has been struck between Old Leamingtonians and North Leamington School to help encourage more youngsters to take up rugby.

Worcester Warriors have the RFU mission to encourage the playing of the sport within their geographical area, which includes Leamington and Warwickshire.

Jamie Southwell is one of five appointed ‘Community Coaches’ whose mission is to work with schools and rugby clubs to inspire the next generation of sporting heroes.

Southwell suggested to Old Leamingtonians a link-up with North Leamington School for boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 (ages 12 -14) and he committed his own time for an evening of activities aimed at identifying and developing players who wanted to be further involved in rugby union.

The school was enthusiastic about the event and head of PE, Dan Wood, brought 36 boys to The Crofts for Southwell’s coaching session.

The event was also attended by Anna Macdonnell the RFU Community Coach for South Warwickshire, who was impressed by the turnout and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

Some players are now signed up to the OLs’ junior section and there are plans to stage further events in the future.

Southwell also wants to run further session for girls as well as boys as the RFU is keen to encourage the ladies game.
