Young aces net a piece of history for Warwickshire

Leamington Editorial 29th Jun, 2018   0

TEN school footballers from across Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth guided Warwickshire’s under-14 Schools side to an historic Midlands Counties League title.

Myton School students Leon Underhill, Josh Fitzgerald and Finley Whitehead along with Malaki Reeve, Evan Osborne, Tom Day, Billy Doxey and Will France, all from Kenilworth, Ted Rowe (North Leamington) and Matty Reed (Aylesford) all played their part in making history.

The group of talented youngsters only lost one game and became the first Warwickshire team of any age group to win the league in 44 years.

A season which included wins against West Midlands, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire was particularly impressive considering the number of players available for selection in the other counties.

Coach Darren Slater said: “With Coventry schools coming under the West Midlands region, Warwickshire’s catchment area for player selection is probably the smallest of all the county teams.

“To win the league is a fantastic achievement.”
