Holleran: "We have to ask ourselves 'are we doing enough'?"

FOOTBALL: SUCCESSIVE defeats against Telford and Nuneaton dropped Leamington to the bottom of the Vanarama National League North.

The Brakes conceeded seven and scored none over a miserable bank holiday weekend.

And manager Paul Holleran revealed he questioned his men ‘are we good enough’ following Monday’s 3-0 home defeat to Telford.

A 2-1 opening day win against Gainsboorugh Trinity has been the only result worth celebrating for Brakes so far this season, and it gets tougher for Holleran’s side with trips to FC United of Manchester, Darlington, and Curzon Ashton to follow in the next month.

Speaking after Monday’s loss, Holleran said small mistakes are costing his side league points.

He added: “After Nuneaton we wanted to put in a performance that was more about us.

“We started the game brightly, probably the most positive start we’ve had all season. But chances came our way and we didn’t take them.

“We made mistakes during a small period of the game and we’ve been punished.”

An early brace from Telford’s Anthony Dwyer appeared to suck the energy out of Brakes on Monday – and Holleran has doubts that his men are capable of chasing a two goal deficit at this stage.

“It’s difficult for us to chase a 2-0 game,” said Holleran.

“Certain teams in this division can, but I’m not sure we are one of them.

“For the rest of the afternoon we were hoping we could stay in the game and have chances to make it 2-1. But those chances didn’t present themselves and we faded.

“There’s been a lot of questions asked and we haven’t come up with the answers. We’re falling short – all of us. Me, the staff, and the players.

“It’s now time to take stock and have a look at what we’re doing.

“We’re bottom of the table for a reason. We knew it’d be difficult, but we’re making it difficult.

“We have to ask ourselves individually ‘are we doing enough?’.”
