FOOTBALL - Leamington edge closer to play-off place after Leiston draw

Leamington Editorial 22nd Apr, 2024 Updated: 24th Apr, 2024   0

LEAMINGTON know only a win only on the final day of the season would guarantee a top-five finish following a 1-1 draw with Leiston.

The Brakes missed the chance to secure their place in the end of season play-offs after Cally Stewart cancelled out Albie Armin’s opener at Victory Road.

And the result means Leamington sit fourth in the Southern League Premier Central table with one match left to play.

The Brakes are two points clear of both Stratford Town and Stamford who sit outside of the play-off places and one point clear of fifth-placed Redditch.

Paul Holleran’s side also have a superior goal difference to all three of the sides below them meaning a point could be enough to secure a top-five finish if other results go their way.

Against Leiston, the home side took the lead on 59 minutes as Armin unleashed an unstoppable strike past Callum Hawkins after the Brakes failed to properly clear their lines.

However, the visitors drew level on 68 minutes when Stewart beat the offside trap before stabbing an effort past Leiston goalkeeper Marcus Mehew.

And the Brakes thought they had won the game late on only for Jack Edwards to see his effort ruled out for offside to ensure the visitors need a result on the final day of the campaign to secure a play-off place.

Leamington finish the season at home to relegation-threatened AFC Sudbury on Saturday, April 27 with kick-off at 3pm at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium.
