Get me out of here! Leamington’s Escape Room Joins the Global Craze

The Observer’s Claire Bullivant visited Leamington’s Experimental Escape on Warwick Street to find out the appeal…

Escape rooms started life as a Japanese craze, but have gained immense popularity across the globe. In fact, there are nearly 1500 of them now here in the UK.

According to Experimental Escape’s General Manager Charlie Little: “I think escape rooms have really taken off because the public are looking for something different and exciting. You can have a fun time and also put your brain to the test. If you haven’t yet given them a go, go try one, you won’t be disappointed!”

They all vary in their theme or story line but they all involve being “locked” in a room where you’re given an hour to escape by solving a series of clues and puzzles. Basically speaking the more super sleuths you have on your team the better!

My team on this occasion consists of ITVBe’s Real Housewife of Cheshire Leilani Dowding and her model sister turned business woman Mel. Leilani is good at analytical things, Mel is a wizard at mathematical puzzles and I decide I bring the enthusiasm.

So here we are at Experimental Escape on Warwick Street and we’ve got just sixty minutes to escape the confines of these walls. All we’ve been told is feuding twins Walter and Winston have hidden a flawless diamond in their country estate and we’re the professional cat burglars charged with the high risk task of stealing it. If we don’t recover it and escape by the time security guards return, we’ll be locked up… forever. Time to get our thinking caps on.

We enter into what looks like a gentleman’s study with an elegant writing desk in the middle of the floor, a world map on the wall and an open fireplace. We start picking up old books and trying to open drawers in the hope of finding our first clue. What are we looking for? A key? A message? A puzzle? Something out of the ordinary? It’s all of the above.

We play with the lights, try and call out on the telephone, look under all the ornaments, poke around the fireplace and then we find it… a clue… which leads to another clue… we’re on our way to recovering the diamond.

It’s so much fun the hour whizzes by… well the 58 minutes and 44 seconds do. Yes, that’s right we escaped with a minute and 16 seconds to go! It was close but we pile out patting each other on the back and dissecting our Columbo like qualities…

“I can’t believe you worked that out… How did you manage to open that door?… That was amazing when you figured out that magnet…”  we take turns exclaiming as we proudly bounce back down onto the street.

Eat your heart out Sherlock, Marple and Poirot… I’m with a celebrity and we got out of there!
