£11billion online fraud cost prompts Warwickshire Police to release advisory book

A BOOK has been released by Warwickshire Police to help businesses protect themselves from being targeted by criminals.

The Little Book of Big Scams has been released as part of the Your Business Matters initiative which highlights the importance of taking simple steps to protect business infrastructure.

Offering valuable crime prevention advice, the book’s aim is to provide advice to guard businesses against fraud by listing practical tips and guidance to help identify risks.

Superintendent Sue Thomas is the force’s lead on business crime.

She said she hopes the book will encourage business owners to incorporate the recommended precautions to help them stay protected.

She added: “We accept business owners often appreciate the importance of reinforcing their security procedures but find it difficult to find time in their busy schedules.

“We hope that The Little Book of Big Scams helps with this task and makes the process simpler and smoother.

“All too often we are approached by businesses after they have become victims of crime and we are keen to reduce this number.

“We are working to engage with as many businesses as possible before they fall victim in the hope to prevent this from happening.”

Last year, fraud and cyber crime cost the UK economy almost £11billion.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Bower said: “Basic crime prevention and risk management information provided in The Little Book of Big Scams could protect against a large number of cyber attacks suffered by businesses.

“Being aware of the kind of tactics used by fraudsters and understanding the scams to look out for can go a long way towards ensuring that your systems and infrastructure remain secure.”
