Air ambulance called out to 500 incidents involving horses

HORSE riders are being urged to be seen and stay safe after two air ambulances had to attend 500 incidents involving horses over the past four years.

Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance and Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance have teamed up to urge riders to take measures to ensure they remain safe when riding or handling horses.

Philippa Gibbs, base manager and critical care paramedic for WNAA, said accidents were often caused by ill-fitting or poorly-maintained tack and equipment.

She added: “Regularly having tack checked and fitted means you are at less risk of having a serious accident.

“Another common cause of accidents that is less obvious is handling the horses themselves.

“Not using the correct safety equipment when caring for or leading your horse can lead to serious injuries, so you should always make sure you are properly equipped.”

Warwick Racecourse will be hosting an air ambulance fundraiser on March 12 with a Cheltenham Festival preview evening – attended by top trainer Dan Skelton and ex-jockey Jason Maguire. Guests will enjoy racing in the comfort of a private hospitality marquee, drinks reception, lunch and afternoon tea. Email [email protected] for further details.
