Animal sanctuary appeals for donations after rescuing nearly 30 lambs

AN ANIMAL sanctuary is appealing for donations after rescuing nearly 30 lambs.

Staff at Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary (FARS) took on the animals to save them from slaughter after a farmer asked them to take the bottle-fed flock.

The Wolverton sanctuary has now taken in some 40 sheep this month and is asking for donations to help support their ever expanding menagerie.

Former veterinary nurse Carole Webb founded the sanctuary which has some 400 sheep – many of who were found abandoned or seriously ill, or both – in its care.

She has been running the FARS charity for some 30 years, and currently has help from staff members Alice Partridge from Solihull and Abi Malins from Stratford.

Aside from sheep, the park is home to pigs, goats, ducks, birds and even pigeons.

The 74-year-old said the new additions were all very friendly, lively and growing well.

She added: “It’s brilliant that we were able to rescue so many lambs.

“My absolute passion is campaigning against live exports. Around 3,000 sheep are exported live and slaughtered daily so to be able to save these lambs has made me very happy.

“They are so affectionate and intelligent, it breaks your heart when you think about the things that happen to them.”

Carole originally set up the charity in Cambridge. She heard about a newborn lamb not expected to live and convinced the farmer to let her take him. She instantly fell in love with ‘Larry’ and nursed him back to health. Her wooly family soon grew and she eventually set up FARS which relies entirely on donations to meet its yearly £80,00 running costs.
