ARMONICO Consort perform choral works by lesser-known member of the Baroque musical dynasty, Francesco Scarlatti, at Warwick’s St Mary’s Church on Saturday January 29
Artistic director Christopher Monks will direct the composer’s Dixit Dominus and Messa a 16 on Saturday January 29.
The concert will also see renowned Baroque violin specialist Rachel Podger join Armonico Consort’s period instrumentalists, bringing her inspirational interpretations to Bach’s A minor and Vivaldi’s G major violin concertos.
Francesco Scarlatti was overshadowed by his elder brother, Alessandro, and nephew Domenico but, as the author of the new editions Dr Geoffrey Webber will explain in pre-concert talks, the dynasty was much wider, with both male and female members of the family working as musicians, often with colourful personal lives.
Performances and a CD of the two works by Francesco Scarlatti helped launch Armonico Consort in its early days with its Wigmore Hall debut and first invitations abroad.
Its 20th anniversary is therefore a fitting occasion to make the first fully professional recording of the two masterpieces.
