Author debuts children's book at Wellesbourne Library

A CHILDREN’S book for little nature lovers had its ‘world premier’ at Wellesbourne Library.

Youngsters turned out to hear the first ever reading of The Adventures of Lionel the Leaf – a new book written by local resident and now author Derek Eccleston.

At the library, Derek and his granddaughter Poppy read passages from the book – an endearing story about the life of a leaf on a horse chestnut tree, who dreams that one day he can fly like all his friends.

Like many grandparents, Derek used to collect conkers with Poppy.. And as a keen gardener, he planted the conkers in pots of compost and most of them grew into small trees. During lockdown, his thoughts turned into a children’s story, by creating characters from the natural world as they visit the tree during the changing seasons. They can all fly, but Lionel the Leaf can’t – despite being desperate to join them.

Derek was persuaded to send his story to publishers, and much to his surprise, several were interested in taking it forward.

Publishers Austin Maculey said: “We are really excited about the friendly storyline and compelling cast of characters young readers will resonate with, as they learn more about nature and the changing of the seasons. The fun language used and endearing characters are sure to bring joy and laughter to children and adult storytellers alike.”
