NURSES at Warwick Hospital’s Aylesford Unit have been recognised as the best cancer nursing team in the country.

The Royal College of Nursing announced the team as the winners of their Cancer Nursing Award, beating stiff competition from others across the country.

The award recognises the impressive chemotherapy services being provided by nurses at the hospital.

Nurse consultant Carole Connor, who leads the team, said: “The nursing team and I were so pleased to receive the award. It recognises innovation and excellence in nursing so there were some extremely good nurses in all categories.

We never forget that our patients and their carers are at the heart of what we do.

“As a team we are whole-heartedly committed to delivering the best possible care to these patients and carers. Achieving this would not have been possible without the continued support from our medical staff and other health professionals who make an essential contribution to our services.”

South Warwickshire Foundation Trust – which runs Warwick Hospital – are currently developing a second cancer unit to be housed on their Stratford site. It will be run by the same team and is set to be completed early next year.

Monica Burchell from Macmillan Cancer Support – which works closely with the Aylesford Unit nurses – said: “Being diagnosed with cancer can be devastating. So when you’re going through treatment, to know that you have people striving to improve your experience of care is really reassuring. It’s great for people in South Warwickshire to see the hard work of their local hospital team recognised.”
