Best lawn bowls players in Leamington for national championships

Leamington Editorial 5th Aug, 2017   0

THE BEST lawn bowlers in the country will be in Leamington over the coming month.

Thousands of players and spectators are expected in town as Victoria Park hosts the annual Bowls England National Championships from today until September 3.

Many of the sport’s top names will be action, including current world champions Jamie Walker, Andrew Knapper and Robert Paxton plus the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallists Sophie Tolchard, Ellen Falkner and Sian Honnor.

Play starts at 9.30am today with the final stages of the men’s and women’s inter-county championships. A total of 35 titles are at stake during the 30-day event.

Aero Bowls have been named as Official Title Sponsors of the Bowls England National Championships for the third successive year, and visitors to the event will have the opportunity each day to try bowls on the championship greens.

Bowls England chief executive Tony Allcock said: “This is now the fourth year of our combined National Championships at Victoria Park and each year work goes on to ensure that both players and spectators have a memorable and enjoyable one. We are looking forward to 30 days of tremendous bowling and thank Warwick District Council for its continued support of the sport. I must also thank all of our sponsors and individual supporters once again for all of their contributions.”

Entry to the championships is free of charge. Chargeable parking is available in Victoria Park and in nearby town centre car parks.

Hosting the championships provides an estimated economic boost to the area of over £1million.

Following its success in 2016, Bowls England will again be offering a live scoring service during the latter stages of all events. A full schedule of matches to be covered by this service may be found at www.bowlsengland.com

Full results of all matches will be published at the conclusion of each session on the Bowls England website and social media channels. All draws, including results, can be viewed on the Bowls England Competitions Portal at bowlsengland.247.tv/
