Bid to tackle hate crime on public transport

STAMPING out hate crime on public transport is being tackled with a tried and tested initiative.

The Hate Crime Charter was launched in Warwickshire last year and saw 82 shops, restaurants and takeaways sign up.

Staff receive training on how to prevent and report hate crime and signs around the business stress it will not be tolerated.

And the scheme has been such a success it is now being rolled out across public transport.

The charter was launched by charitable organisation the Equality and Inclusion Partnership (Equip) which is working with Warwickshire Police and the county’s crime commissioner Philip Seccombe.

They hope local bus companies, taxis and train operators will sign up to the initiative.

Mr Seccombe said: “Hate crime has no place in Warwickshire and it’s important that all members of our community can go about their daily lives without fear.

“We know hate crime is a significant issues in transport settings. By having these transport providers sign up to the charter, it will send a strong message that hate will not be tolerated in their operations and provide staff with the training opportunity they need to address it.”
