Big day boosts Warwick Hospital treatment unit

A KIND-HEARTED couple defied tradition on their wedding day.

Rather than request flowers or presents, Douglas and Yvonne Faulconbridge asked friends and family to make a donation to Warwick Hospital’s Aylesford Unit – where Douglas is a patient.

After digging deep, their nearest and dearest helped raise a total of £1,185 for the cancer unit at the Lakin Road hospital.

Douglas was diagnosed with stage four follicular lymphoma in 2010 just a year after meeting Yvonne but he has not let his condition get in the way of maintaining an active lifestyle.

In addition to preparing for the wedding, Douglas volunteers at the Kenilworth ADC Cubs and his fund-raising for the Lymphoma Association saw him receive a British Empire Medal in 2015.

Speaking following the wedding at Kenilworth Castle, Douglas said: “Yvonne made it clear from the start we would work through it together, no matter what.

“She has come to all my chemotherapy sessions and consultant appointments and there is no doubt it has made us stronger as a couple.

“We have had our home together for a few years now so we asked our guests to make donations instead of giving us gifts.

“We were staggered by their generosity and are delighted to hand over the money, which will be put to good use to help benefit patients at the unit like myself.”
