New Orleans jazz birthday concert to raise money for charity

Leamington Editorial 12th May, 2018   0

MIKE Porter’s birthday means music and money for charity.

For the past 33 years the retired bank manager from Wasperton has celebrated his birthday with a New Orlean’s-style jazz concert.

And this year will be no different when regular band the Tierra Buena perform at St Gregory’s Village Church in Offchurch – where Mike used to be church warden.

The 82-year-old has raised nearly £20,000 for charity Christian Aid over the years, and this year’s concert is on Thursday May 17 – his 83rd birthday.

He said: “This all started when I was 50 and we have such a good time we’ve done the same every year since, and it’s always for such a good cause.

“We have the same band every year too – they are all in their 80s now too and their music is fantastic.”

The event starts at 8pm and tickets cost £7.50 including wine and nibbles. All proceeds go to Christian Aid.

Tickets will be available on the door.
