Book tells the history of Warwick from A to Z

Leamington Editorial 26th Nov, 2023   0

THE COUNTY town of Warwick is famous for its castle rising abovebthe River Avon but there is much more to this historic town, as SC Silkman reveals in the lavishly illustrated A-Z of Warwick Places-People-History, published by Amberley.

Although many medieval houses were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1694, buildings from an earlier age can still be found, including its oldest hostelry, The Roebuck, and Lord Leycester Hospital.

Historic characters down the decades include Warwick the Kingmaker, world champion boxer Randolph Turpin and socialite and campaigner Daisy, Countess of Warwick, as well as the ichthyosaur in the Market Hall Museum.

And the town’s many events include the summer celebration of roots music, Warwick Folk Festival, to the Victorian evening Christmas lights switch-on.

A–Z of Warwick reveals the history behind the town, its streets and buildings, businesses and the people connected with it.

Alongside the famous historical connections are unusual characters, tucked-away places and unique events that are less well known.
