BUDDING builders, big and small, got together to make bird boxes in Moreton Morrell.
Carpentry department apprentices and staff from Moreton Morrell College visited Moreton Morrell C of E Primary School for a day of workshops to teach pupils how to assemble the bird boxes.
The workshops are part of a continued partnership between the college and the primary school to give the youngsters an insight into careers in the construction industry.
Under supervision from apprentices from the college, the children drilled holes, inserted nails and used glue to put together the bird boxes – which they were then able to take home.
Last year the college’s students created two hand-crafted welly racks for the children’s outdoor education programme.
Apprentices used their carpentry and joinery skills to design and build the racks which fit up to 30 pairs of wellies and added customised writing on the frame’s top.
Moreton Morrell College plans to continue its support for the school through a range of future projects, including constructing raised planting beds for the school to use in a vegetable patch and sensory garden.
Headteacher Sarah Eadon said: “It’s important for our community that we are linked up closely with the college and we are thrilled to have reestablished those links in recent months.
“The welly racks have been brilliant. They are used every day and the bird box lessons were amazing too. The children said ‘this has been the best lesson ever’ afterwards.
“The students were really engaged with our pupils and are excellent role models. When you have something like a college on your doorstep, our children should feel inspired to go there.”
