Budding historians help trial new Warwick Castle app

‘APPY youngsters are bringing history alive at Warwick Castle.

Young historians, aged seven to ten, were recruited to a’ Warwick Castle Mini History Team’ to trial a new app. The team included seven year-old Amelia Petrucci from Princethorpe.

The free downloadable app brings to life the story of Richard Neville – the medieval Earl of Warwick known as ‘The Kingmaker’ – as he prepares his troops for battle, introducing a range of interactions, quizzes and task-based quests.

The team was tasked with training their adult counterparts on how best to use the app and to give them tips on how best to on keep kids interested.

According to research figures, the average UK child now spends 15 hours a week online – a fact taken into account when the History Team used social media to recruit the young historians.

History team leader Melissa Paniccia said: “We were very impressed by the applications we received for our first ever Mini History Team due to the historical knowledge and the evident enthusiasm of the entrants.

“Selecting only six kids from across the UK to come to Warwick Castle and trial our new app was tough, and the standard of entries was so high we now plan to expand the Team in the future. Us oldies learned a thing or two about how apps can be used to tell a good historical story, and why kids relate so well to interactive content – it’s natural for them given their day-to-day habits.”
