Candidates ready to fight it out in general election

Editorial Correspondent 15th Nov, 2019 Updated: 15th Nov, 2019   0

SEVEN candidates will be battling it out for the Warwick and Leamington seat at the forthcoming general election.

Candidates had until yesterday to register to stand for the Thursday December 12 poll as voters choose their MP at the third general election in less than five years.

Labour’s Matt Western will be aiming to retain the seat he won from the Conservatives at the 2017 election.

Mr Western will defend a slim 1,206 majority with his main challenge expected to come from Conservative candidate Jack Rankin. Others challenging for the seat will be Liberal Democrat Louis Adam, Xander Bennett representing the Social Democratic Party, Jonathan Chilvers for the Green Party, Independent Bob Dhillon, and Brexit Party candidate Tim Griffiths.

In Kenilworth and Southam, Jeremy Wright will be looking to hold onto the seat for the Tories.

The member of former prime minister Theresa May’s cabinet will be defending an 18,000 plus majority against Labour’s Antony Tucker, Liberal Democrat Richard Dickson, the Green Party’s Alison Firth and Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Nicholas Green.

And in neighbouring Stratford Nadhim Zahawi will also be defending a large majority of nearly 21,000 in the historically safe Conservative seat.

Attempting to oust him will be Liberal Democrat Dominic Skinner, Labour’s Felix Ling, and the Green Party’s Dave Passingham.
