Robbers crash car through Leamington building society's window

THE ROBBERS who smashed a car through the window of a Leamington building society escaped with an unspecified amount of cash.

The Kia Sportage destroyed the front window of the upper Parade branch of the Coventry Building Society.

Police raced to the scene shortly after 8.30am but the robbers had fled with two cash machine trays – and remain on the run.

It is thought four men were involved. They are believed to have made off in a silver Vauxhall Astra, which was later abandoned on Morrell Street – just round the corner from the building society.

They are then thought to have got into a dark grey saloon type vehicle.

An eyewitness said they saw two men get out of the car which crashed into the building – one with a black handkerchief over his face, and the other wearing a balaclava.

Officers cordorned off the scene, and for a short time the entire upper stretch of the Parade from Warwick Street to Clarendon Avenue.

An ambulance was also on the scene, but it is still not known if anyone was injured.

The car driven into the building was registered in Oxford in 2013. It is not yet know if it had been stolen.

The branch was closed for the day.
