WORK to ease traffic congestion in Warwick town centre is set to see changes to the Northgate junction.
The busy junction will undergo changes aimed at keeping traffic moving, making it more pedestrian-friendly, and improving air quality.
Traffic management changes will include a right turn only into Northgate Street from Barrack Street, and no right turn into Northgate Street for vehicles travelling on the A425 from from Saltisford.
Work is set to start on Tuesday May 7 and is expected to be completed by the end of August. For part of the works this will include one-way running on The Butts and Cape Road to ease traffic flows and avoid the need for temporary traffic lights.
Warwickshire County Council strategic director Mark Ryder said: “The work in and around Warwick town centre has been carried out with the full involvement of the public and we have carefully considered all the responses to the consultation.
“We are getting ever nearer to a scheme that will provide the best possible experience for visitors to the town, encouraging footfall into the town centre and giving its economy a boost.
“The Northgate scheme’s contribution to this will be an improved traffic flow reducing the amount of vehicles that are waiting and not moving, significantly improving air quality.
“The public realm will complement the rich heritage of the area and further enhance the experience of visiting Warwick. Inevitably there will be some disruption while the work is ongoing but this has been planned to keep this to a minimum. I hope people will show patience while the work is taking place.”
County highway chiefs also plan changes to tackle the bottleneck next to the Punch Bowl pub – which is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass – once detailed plans have been confirmed to convert the former police station opposite into a medical centre. The Butts will eventually be one-way to traffic as part of the major traffic management scheme being carried in and around the town centre.
