Chocolate challenge by care home residents marks Sir Captain Tom's birthday

Leamington Editorial 15th May, 2021   0

A CHOCOLATE challenge undertaken by Leamington care home residents marked war veteran Sir Captain Tom’s birthday.

Residents of Arden House Care Home set out to eat no less than 100 chocolate buttons in the name of the late centenarian, on the weekend of what would have been his 101st birthday.

The Captain Tom Foundation – the charity set-up to continue his legacy – launched the challenge, asking people to create a fund-raiser of their choosing – as long as it included the number 100.

The residents racked their brains to come up with a challenge, and the 100 chocolate buttons idea was born.

Activities co-ordinator Julie said: “I’m sure that we easily managed to eat 100 chocolate buttons, possibly even more. Even our residents who aren’t that keen on chocolate took part in honour of Captain Tom.”

The residents were inspired by Captain Tom’s mantra, ‘tomorrow will be a good day,’ as this last year of coronavirus restrictions has proven a difficult time for all – particularly care home residents unable to see their families.

Sir Captain Tom played a major part in uniting the nation during the first national lockdown. His quest to walk 100 laps of his garden raised £32.8million for NHS charities, and inspired people across the UK to stay positive while staying safe at home.
