Comyn cycle plans given the go-ahead

CONTROVERSIAL plans to develop cycling trails at Newbold Comyn have been given the green light.

Users of the Comyn and cyclists have disagreed over whether bike tracks should be created on a section of the land.

But Warwick District Council’s planning committee gave plans the go-ahead at a recent meeting.

Officers say a masterplan for Newbold Comyn showed the potential for outdoor activities on the site along with an extension to the nature reserve, and was approved by the council’s executive in last November following consultation.

The first part of the masterplan to be brought forward is the provision of cycling facilities on a section of the former golf course, providing a mix of trails which allow people a safe and secure place to develop their cycling skills. The area will also include a cycling hub in the former golf shop which will provide cycle hire facilities, a cafe and toilets.

Coun Alan Rhead, spokesman for climate change says the location and design of the trails will ensure all users of the space will be able to share it amicably as access to the area will not be limited to just cyclists.

He added that providing a designated area also ensures this kind of activity is isolated to a small section of the Comyn, leaving other areas planned for greater nature enhancement for all users to enjoy.

Coun Rhead said: “I am pleased to see planning permission has been granted which is the first step in providing local cycling facilities for the local community.

“Cycling is such an important skill to develop, especially as we move towards more sustainable ways of travelling. Having a local facility where children and families can learn together is a significant step towards a greener and more environmentally conscious district. These cycle trails will be free to use, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access them.”

The council will now begin work on the conditions as set out in the planning permission.

Once work is due to commence, the council will keep residents informed of the progress and any potential temporary disruption while the trails are constructed.
