Coronavirus: Green bin collections to restart in Warwick district

Leamington Editorial 16th Apr, 2020   0

GREEN bin collections will restart in Warwick district from Monday.

Warwick District Council has been following the latest government guidance to protect the health and safety of the public and colleagues on the frontline who continue to operate the district’s waste and recycling services.

This has required some temporary changes to collections in order to maintain the service and prioritise the collection of grey bin household waste.

Since the suspension of green bin collections on April 6 the council’s refuse and recycling team has been working with colleagues from Warwickshire County Council and partners Suez and Veolia to redeploy resources, enabling the service to be restarted in line with the necessary social distancing requirements.

District neighbourhood services spokeswoman Coun Moira-Ann Grainger said: “These are challenging times for those operating our waste collections and we are doing everything we can to protect the health and safety of both the public and our crews.

“We do however realise the value and importance of the green sin service to residents, particularly at this time of year. I’m therefore pleased to announce that though collaborative working with Warwickshire County Council we have sourced additional vehicles and drivers which will allow us to restart the service from next week.”

The council advise residents the green bin service will remain under review, and along with other collections may be subject to delay.

Under the new arrangements there will be one driver and one loader in the cab of the recycling truck which will be followed by an additional vehicle and crew member.

Coun Grainger added: “Whilst we continue to provide all of our refuse, recycling and green waste services, collections will take longer than usual and may fall a couple of days behind. We do however ask the public to continue to put their bins out on the correct day and assist us by composting where possible and minimising food waste.”
