CATERING staff at Warwick School are busy cooking up help for NHS workers and the homeless.
The school may be in lockdown but the catering team are producing ready meals for NHS workers and Leamington-based homeless charity Helping Hands Community Project.
In recent days they have made 150 packed lunches and 250 prepared meals – portions of beef chilli and rice, bean chilli and rice and lasagne.
They are looking to continue this effort producing some 100 ready meals and 50 packed lunches each day.
The core volunteers in the kitchen are head of food operations Carlo Lubrano, front of house operations manager John Badr and catering assistant Mandy Pierce, with many others also offering helping.
Warwick School is working with local family butcher Aubrey Allen, in collaboration with other local businesses, to produce and distribute the meals and packed lunches.
Carlo said, “When the school closure announcement was made, we knew that we didn’t want our food stock to go to waste.
“We had food supplies, a kitchen, and willing volunteers, and wanted to do something beneficial to the community during these difficult times. After some investigation we discovered that Aubrey Allen were offering to pick up and distribute any meals that we could make, and we were very keen to be part of this fantastic initiative.
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Aubrey Allen for their support, as well as to Simply Veg for donating fresh vegetables to enable us to keep cooking.”
Alongside the catering initiative, Warwick School and Warwick Junior School science departments have collectively, with the help of science technicians Rachel Edwards and Cassie Venn, donated 350 pairs of safety spectacles, 50 pairs of protective goggles, 30 boxes of disposable gloves and disposable aprons to Warwick Hospital.
