Council says new graveyard needed in Southam

A NEW graveyard is needed in Southam.

The current burial ground at St James Church is full and Southam Town Council says a new one would cost some £300,000, with annual running costs of around £30,000.

The council has proposed a natural burial ground with open space, landscaping and oak posts rather than gravestones.

It will have car parking and seating for visitors.

The council said burial plots and areas reserved for ashes already paid for would not be not affected.

The cost of the new graveyard could be met by an 18 per cent increase in the town council portion of council tax – meaning a Band D property bill could rise by some £15 to £95.
