County's most vulnerable supported throughout winter thanks to campaign

Leamington Editorial 29th Dec, 2018   0

A CAMPAIGN supporting some of the county’s most vulnerable has been launched.

Heart of England Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter appeal aims to provide much-needed support to those affected by isolation, homelessness and food poverty throughout winter.

The foundation – which awards grants to projects – is calling on businesses to donate. It is also asking people who are in a good financial position to donate all or part of their Winter Fuel Allowance.

The charity is also looking for fund-raisers to organise events to support the appeal.

Last year the campaign – which is now in its fifth year – raised more than £6,500 for projects supporting vulnerable people.

Chief executive Tina Costello said: “Our appeal has supported thousands of individuals across the area during one of the hardest times of the year.

“Recent figures show more than nine million people in the UK are either always or often lonely, more than one homeless person dies every day and in 2018 food bank use has reached its highest rate on record.

“These statistics demonstrate how vital the Surviving Winter appeal is, funding grassroots community projects which tackle social issues right.

“There are a number of ways people can support this year’s campaign including making a donation or holding fundraising events.

“The appeal has received a huge amount of support over the years and we hope that this year’s will be just as successful.”
