Cyclist shot while riding over Campion Hills

A CYCLIST was shot while riding over Campion Hills in Leamington.

The Leamington Cycling Club member was among a group of 15 mountain bikers when he was hit in the leg by a pellet believed to have been fired from an air rifle.

The cyclists were heading towards Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre at the end of a ride at around 9pm on Thursday. They were passing a traveller camp – which has since moved on – parked up near the BMX track.

A spokesman for the club said: “The group of mountain bikers were at the end of a regular ride. Several shots were heard and what were assumed to be pellets passed by several riders. One of the riders was hit on the leg by one of these.

“His skin was broken and blood drawn even though he was wearing thick and substantial shorts designed for mountain biking.

“We are pleased some of the younger regular riders were not in attendance and thankful the injury wasn’t more serious. The organised club rides will avoid this area of the town until the matter is resolved, and the club has informed its membership to take care if using this route outside of club rides.”

Police are appealing for information about the incident and said they had increased patrols in the area.

Call police on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with any information.
