Daredevils take to the skies for mental health charity

DAREDEVILS have been taking to air and water to raise money for a charity close to their hearts’.

Two teams from Young People First – formerly Warwickshire Association of Youth Clubs – took on a raft race and abseil to help fund Sharp Minds, a programme which supports socially isolated youngsters with emotional and mental health problems.

The water-loving team built their own raft along with the help of volunteers at Men’s Shed. The float powered along the River Avon for five hours as part of a Raft Race, until one of the barrels keeping it from sinking fell off.

They raised £200 towards the programme.

And another three brave fund-raisers abseiled down the National Abseil Centre in Northampton, raising an impressive £850.

The building is 26 metres higher than Big Ben and it took the team 20 minutes to scale from top to bottom.

Charity spokesman David Skoppek said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to our teams who showed real courage.

“The money they have raised will go along way to helping us continue our work supporting young people to overcome challenges and succeed.”
