Determined Barford resident overcomes the odds to complete charity bike ride

A DETERMINED Barford resident who was told he would never walk again has completed a charity bike ride.

Gregory Weston suffered a life-changing accident 12 years ago, which left him with a severe brain injury that impacted his mobility and the movement of his left arm and hand.

He was told he would never walk again but he defied the predictions and pushed himself through a challenging rehabilitation programme.

And not only has Gregory managed to make such a miraculous recovery but he also decided to give back by raising cash for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

He was particularly moved by the story of Carter Charring – known as Carter the Brave – who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at four-years-old.

Carter received life-saving treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He is now in remission and has recently started secondary school.

Greg decided that he wanted to do something to help children like Carter and he set himself the daunting task of cycling a marathon. But not only this – he wanted to achieve this in less than two hours.

And after some arduous training sessions, Greg completed his marathon at a Warwick gym, completing the 26.2 miles in one hour and 48 minutes.

Greg has so far raised £4,010 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Lucy Chatting, Carter’s mum said: “We are so very grateful to Greg, who defied all odds and rode the marathon at fantastic speed raising such a brilliant amount for Carter the Brave.

These funds have been ring fenced at BCH for the next project which is under discussion at the moment.”
