District transport service saved by generous donations

A VOLUNTEER transport service in the district is driving forward thanks to the generosity of supporters.

The Health Transport Service has been taking disabled and older people to medical appointments for the past 25 years.

But after funding cuts by the previous Primary Care Trust (PCT), the charity was reluctantly forced to send letters to users informing them a £2 booking fee would have to be introduced in January.

They responded however not with complaints but by sending donations which have so far topped £650 – showing just how valued the service is.

A spokesman from the charity said: “Although this in itself will not close the funding gap it demonstrates the fantastic support for the service and how essential it is for the users.

“All of our customers that have rung express a great appreciation of the service and praised all the volunteers for friendliness and always being helpful and on time.”
